Making the Transition to Nursery

First Day At Nursery

On your child’s first day, we ask that you ensure their group is settled into their allocated room. This allows the key person to spend quality time with you and your child, as this day can be upsetting for both of you.

We endeavour to make the transition as smooth as possible and appreciate your co-operation. We request that your child bring a named bag, spare clothes for those little accidents, and a named coat to avoid confusion. We do have group bags if you would like to purchase one.

You are welcome to stay for as long as you need, but you should not feel guilty if you want to make a quick getaway. However, we do not advise that you “sneak” away when they are distracted, as this can be very upsetting for children. We suggest you hug and kiss them when you leave and reassure them that you will return later.
Leaving your child at nursery is a big step for you and your child. It is our job to make this as stress-free as possible. We do this by arranging free taster sessions where your child joins the group, gets to know the other children, and spends quality time getting to know your child’s key person.

Working Together Is Important

We appreciate that you lead busy lives, which is why we provide a variety of ways to share your child’s learning and development.

  • A chat at the end of the session
  • Regular Newsletters.
  • Using the Famly app (translates communications)
  • Join us for a Stay and Play session
  • Arrange a time to meet your child’s key person.

We will provide interesting home learning activities that we can do at home and the nursery; this helps us consolidate their learning. We will provide guidance and activity ideas to support maths, reading and writing and how to help children understand the world around them. Our SENDCo works alongside outside agencies to help children who learn differently and may need extra support. You will find many books in our library in the Conservatory for you to borrow. A good starting point is discussing the pictures, encouraging children to listen and point out what they know.

• Your child’s key person will keep you updated and support you as a family to help your child learn and thrive. They will form a caring, warm, and secure attachment with your child and yourself.
• You can attend nursery and work alongside your child’s key person.
• You could come into the nursery to talk to children about your family and home environment.
• You could come and observe a Storytime session to see how we bring books to life.
• We aim to build a close relationship with you and share ideas about what you can do with your child at home to complement the learning and development that takes place within the nursery.
• Our door is always open to you if you would like to meet for a coffee and discuss areas you may be struggling with at home.
• We are predominantly a female workforce and would welcome dads or grampas to come in and talk to children about the kind of things you do, read a story, or play alongside the children.
• Your key person will work with you to help get your child potty trained before they move up to preschool.
• We can work together on a routine for your child.
